Collaborate with your significant suppliers on decarbonisation
Developing a collaborative approach to decarbonisation with your significant suppliers or partners will help you set mutually agreed decarbonisation targets that you can use to track your suppliers' performance over time. This will contribute to reducing your carbon footprint.
Outline any specific decarbonisation goals you have created for your setting and communicate these to your significant suppliers. Setting out your own goals is an opportunity to engage suppliers on the topic of decarbonisation, which you can use to set expectations around the type of data you would like to collect. This will help you calculate a more accurate carbon footprint over time, and can encourage suppliers to increase their own decarbonisation efforts.
This approach helps to build trust and communication, and can prevent strained relationships from developing, reducing resistance to change, and preventing missed opportunities for improvement. It also paves the way for future standards and target-setting by creating expectations for suppliers to share their own carbon reduction targets, or details on the carbon footprint of the products they provide. It will also help you to determine which of your significant suppliers may not want to engage with you on your decarbonisation journey, so that you can transition to suppliers which align with your goals.
