Assess the opportunity to start a composting programme

A composting programme is an organised effort to collect organic waste, turning it into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to enhance the soil quality at your site. Composting may not be suitable for all settings - assess whether you have space to compost in a way that won't attract vermin.

By composting your waste, such as plant cuttings and vegetable scraps, you can reduce the amount that goes to landfill, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This action supports your sustainable landscaping practices, as you can use the compost you produce on your green spaces. Using natural fertilisers will improve biodiversity.

This approach creates an opportunity for learning across a range of topics including sustainable food, recycling and waste and biodiversity. It also creates a hands-on experience for your children or young people to engage with the natural cycle of decomposition and nutrient cycling.
