Develop an emergency response plan
Develop a detailed plan for how to handle various different climate related emergencies, including extreme temperatures, weather, fires, drought or other unexpected events. This could include developing a process or system where your setting has alerts and early warning systems in place, which gives your estates manager the tools to be proactive and respond quickly to issues when and where they arise.
The plan should include safe spaces (cool rooms in heat stress events for example) evacuation routes, communication strategies, and roles for staff members. It should also include the identification and mitigation strategies required to ensure the continued operation of core services (flood and heat protection for IT, security and communication networks for example) Consider working with your estates team and health and safety lead to develop this collaboratively.
Ensuring the safety of learners and staff in the event of an incident will help to minimise confusion and panic during events, leading to quicker and more effective responses cutting down on time wasted or costs incurred from potential damage.
For settings with a leased estate, it is important to collaborate with your landlord to identify what is possible for your site.
