Engage your catering team or supplier on food waste

Collaborate with your catering staff and suppliers to identify opportunities to reduce food waste. One of the simplest and most impactful ways to immediately improve the sustainability of your setting and reduce your setting's carbon footprint is to stop food waste going to landfill, which produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

This approach will help you to identify focus areas, quick wins, and any long term objectives you may want to achieve. You may want to break this down into different focus areas: waste generation prevention, and residual food waste management.

By taking this action you can avoid the unnecessary costs associated with food that never gets eaten, and lower waste disposal costs, while actively reducing your carbon footprint. It can also help to improve the health and wellbeing of your staff and learners. Unmanaged food portions can lead to over-serving, which may contribute to unhealthy eating habits.

Food can evoke strong emotions, so it's important to engage parents and learners (where appropriate) before agreeing which actions to take. This will also create fantastic learning opportunities on the topic of food waste and sustainability for your whole setting.
