Establish collaborative working practices with all suppliers

At this point, you will have done extensive work to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships with your most significant suppliers. Now, broaden the scope of your collaboration to include all suppliers, regardless of their strategic importance or impact on your carbon footprint. This action will improve the overall sustainability performance of your entire supply chain.

This typically involves standardising sustainable practices and expectations across your supply base, and encouraging all suppliers to adhere to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. For example, you may be able to identify a minimum set of standards you would like all suppliers to adhere to, or offer incentives for good sustainability performance.

You can apply your learning from engaging with your significant suppliers to enable this. It’s important to consider how best to communicate with your whole supplier base, and how to collect any information they provide. Create a standardised approach to help streamline your efforts.

Express your interest in working together and identify ways you can collaborate that will help you to achieve your goals. For example, this might include switching to sustainable packaging and reducing product waste to help you meet your waste and recycling targets. Other examples include improving sourcing policies, or encouraging suppliers to seek preferred standards or certifications such as ISO14001, ISO 53001, ISO 26000, Fair Trade, Ecovadis, or FSC certification.

Taking this step now will enable you to identify suppliers that are open to working with you to improve their sustainability performance and meet your sustainability goals, and those that are more reluctant. This will later help you to set sustainability targets for your whole supply chain, and further refine your supply chain re-procurement plan.

Benefits include promoting environmental stewardship, laying the foundations for progress towards your setting's long term sustainable procurement goals, and improving supplier trust and relationships.
