Understand how your estate is susceptible to climate change
Look to understand and address any parts of your buildings and site that are vulnerable to extreme conditions.
Check how well your setting's heating and ventilation work, and ensure the systems are efficient and well-maintained. Understand how different parts of your estate are affected by extreme heat, cold and rain. For example, you may have some classrooms that become unusable on hot days, which will happen more often due to climate change unless you take measures to adapt them.
This is a proactive action to ensure, when a climatic event occurs such as extreme cold, flooding, or a heatwave, your community will remain safe and comfortable. This is an initial step to get oversight of the most critical points to address. Later, you'll complete a climate risk assessment that looks at this topic in greater depth.
This step has the added benefit of potential cost savings. It will help you to identify any inefficiencies in your systems, and to address heat and flooding issues now and avoid the need for repairs. This will also help to reduce your carbon footprint.
