Improve your data standards and processes
Refine the ways in which your setting collects, manages and analyses its emissions data and information across all three Scopes. This is important to ensure you are accurately tracking progress towards your net zero and decarbonisation goals. It will help you to identify further opportunities to reduce your carbon footprint, and ensure responsibilities and accountability are clear to all.
You should now have familiarised yourself with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, which is widely recognised as the leading method for managing decarbonisation data. Aligning your standards and processes with this framework at your earliest opportunity will ensure you manage your decarbonisation journey, and data, in the best way. This is especially important as you move into the delivery phase of your decarbonisation plan, so that you can accurately track your emissions reduction progress.
Additionally, you may look at implementing a centralised data system, automating data collection and implementing regular internal reviews to ensure that the data collection processes are functioning properly. This will help identify areas where data may be missing or inaccurate and ensure continuous improvement.
Having robust data collection processes ensures your setting can confidently communicate your progress with stakeholders. It will proactively prepare you for any regulatory requirements that may evolve over time, such as Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) or the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). Similarly, having clear, high-quality data may improve your access to new funding and grant opportunities as they develop, and will make applications and reporting more time efficient.
