Use outdoor learning in your Special Educational Needs and Disabilities practice

Embedding outdoor learning in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) practice involves adapting outdoor activities to meet the diverse needs and abilities of children with special needs.

Speak to your SENCO about how to embed outdoor learning into SEND practice. This will be specialised for your setting and the cohort intake. Adapt and design your outdoor space to cater for the specific needs of your SEND learners, such as with sensory gardens, accessible nature trails, or adapted outdoor play equipment. Look to introduce one-to-one or small group sessions with SEND learners outside.

Benefits include providing sensory-rich experiences, promoting physical activity and motor skills development, and creating inclusive learning environments.

By utilising outdoor spaces, you offer opportunities for experiential learning, social interaction, and emotional regulation, which can support the unique learning goals of children with SEND.
