Sustainability training for key decision makers

Your key decision makers must be able to promote sustainable initiatives at your setting. To do this, they will need tailored sustainability training to build their awareness of sustainability challenges, particularly the risks posed by climate change.

This guidance is intended to help you choose training that's right for your setting. We can not recommend particular courses or resource providers.


Identify your key decision makers

Start by identifying who is involved in decision-making processes. These individuals are likely to include, but are not limited to:

  • Governors or trustees
  • Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
  • Middle leaders
  • Sustainability lead or coordinator
  • Site managers
  • Business, finance, and operations staff

Each of these roles plays a different part in advancing sustainability. Understanding their specific responsibilities will allow you to choose the most relevant training for each group.


Tailor training to roles and responsibilities

A one-size-fits-all training approach is unlikely to address the specific needs of each role. For example, your governors, trustees and SLT should receive training focused on strategic planning, governance, and risk management in relation to sustainability. It should also emphasise the financial, reputational, and regulatory risks associated with failing to address climate change, and the benefits of investing in sustainable practices.

Sustainability leads will need more in-depth, specialised training that covers everything from behaviour change to carbon footprint measurement, sustainability reporting, and regulatory compliance. They should be equipped with knowledge about the latest sustainability trends and innovations, so they can guide the organisation toward achieving its sustainability goals.

It’s best not to assume the level of knowledge and awareness a staff member or team might have. Everyone should receive some general awareness training either as a refresher or to improve their understanding.
