Develop a decarbonisation strategy
Develop and share an outline plan to reduce your setting's carbon emissions over time to net zero. Net zero is the point when your setting has sufficiently reduced the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions you produce so they can be absorbed by nature and other measures, leaving zero in the atmosphere.
Your strategy will include your goals, key actions and dates, responsibilities, and metrics for monitoring progress in areas such as energy use, procurement, food and catering. Producing a strategy will help with decision making and planning, and allow you to prioritise the most impactful actions.
You should ensure that your decarbonisation strategy is developed in alignment with other sustainability policies and plans, and should be reviewed and updated in conjunction with these on a regular basis. While you will already have a sustainability strategy, your decarbonisation strategy will focus specifically on reducing GHG emissions, and will help you to develop the detailed plans and actions needed to achieve this. It complements the broader sustainability strategy by addressing the critical issue of climate change directly.
This will help you to seek buy-in from your senior leadership on any actions that you need to take, set clear targets for emissions reduction, ensure compliance with future regulations, and enhance your setting's reputation.
