Deepen your knowledge and understanding of climate change and sustainability
Deepening knowledge is an important step in shaping attitudes toward the environment and fostering a lifelong commitment to sustainability at your setting. Your staff serve as role models. Enabling a deeper understanding of climate issues allows them to practice and model sustainable behaviours, from reducing waste to making environmentally conscious decisions, which can have a ripple effect on learners.
As your setting begins to deliver its sustainability strategy, staff need to align their teaching and operational practices with these goals. A thorough understanding of sustainability ensures the whole community contributes to its success. This action can be achieved in a variety of ways.
For instance, you can offer professional development and training through your CPD programme. This could be through workshops, webinars, or online courses that focus on both the science of climate change and practical sustainability measures.
You may choose to dedicate time in staff meetings to discuss new sustainability initiatives, review progress, share learning resources, and encourage ongoing conversations about how climate education can be integrated into daily teaching practices. Alternatively, you could share regular updates through your existing communications on the latest climate science, significant policy changes, and sustainable practices.
Establish a feedback loop where staff can reflect on their confidence in understanding climate change and sustainability, so you can identify where this may affect areas for improvement. This will help to ensure the success of your climate education and green skills delivery plan, and help you to meet your climate education aims.
