Develop sustainability related supplier selection criteria

Supplier selection criteria are requirements you set that new suppliers must meet in order to be selected. Creating these criteria ensures that any new supplier you engage is aligned with your sustainability goals. This could involve weighting suppliers’ environmental impact or Net Zero commitments in addition to cost and quality when making decisions. For instance, you may develop criteria related to their use of renewable energy, waste reduction programs, carbon footprint tracking, ethical sourcing, sustainable packaging, water and energy efficiency, or certifications such as ISO14001.

This is an important step which will help you when you come to develop your setting's Supply Chain Re-procurement Plan. These selection criteria will form a key part of the re-procurement process, guiding how you evaluate and choose suppliers based on their sustainability practices.

Developing these criteria is important for building a responsible and resilient supply chain. It not only helps reduce your setting's environmental impact and carbon footprint but can also create cost savings reflected in lower prices.
