Let’s Go Zero Climate Action Advisors
Part of Let’s Go Zero, Climate Action Advisors are independent experts who offer free support for schools, colleges, and nurseries across England.
Use estates and site data to support climate education
Use data and information you already have about your setting's site and integrate it into your climate education programme. For example, if your setting has solar panels, you could embed learning about decarbonisation and how solar panels work, and analyse the impact they make on your energy consumption. Or after you complete a biodiversity audit, analyse the findings in science and maths classes.
During travel units, consider conducting a commuting survey and embedding the results into learning. Likewise, use the results of completing a carbon footprint or offshoot data in classes or after school. Integrate data about waste management and recycling programmes into learning, or use the materials in art classes. Work with your site team to plan this learning and consider involving them in classes.
This will help to make lessons more relevant and practical, putting global issues to your local context. This will empower your learners to think about their daily activities and how they have an impact, and encourage responsible stewardship of resources from an early age. It can also feed into your behaviour change programme and drive engagement from learners in initiatives around energy costs, active travel, food, water use and waste.
