Increase the amount of green space at your setting

Optimise any outdoor space to increase the amount of natural vegetation at your setting, such as grass, trees, shrubs, and gardens, creating habitats for local wildlife. If you have little to no outdoor space, consider small-scale solutions such as window boxes, raised beds, and green roofs and walls to create your green space.

When determining which solutions are most appropriate to your setting, consider any other planned building, grounds or infrastructure works. Increasing green space can also help you adapt your setting to become more climate resilient. For example, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) can both increase green space and reduce flood risk.

This action will improve your community's connection to nature, which can have positive effects on mental health and wellbeing, improve the aesthetic of your setting, and improve air quality. By including your children or young people in any green space development, you can create more opportunities for outdoor play and learning related to biodiversity and the environment.

Create a list to save actions and resources, or make a plan for your setting.
