Integrate climate adaptation planning in any planned building or refurbishments projects

Establish a process where climate adaptation is considered in any refurbishment or new build feature to your site. A good way to embed this into routine practice is to include it as an element of the business case of any proposed works.

For example, for refurbishments, it could include trying to find ways to add shade covers, rain planters or sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). For more complicated changes, consider ways to implement climate adaptation in the features of the new structure to facilitate better ventilation, include energy efficiency measures, use sustainable materials, and mitigate flood or heat risks. You may need the support of a contractor to advise on this.

Benefits include lowering long-term operational costs through enhanced energy efficiency, creating a safer and healthier environment, and future-proofing infrastructure against climate hazards.

For those with limited budgets, making incremental changes over time can help reduce high upfront expenditure, allowing your site to adapt and improve gradually to address the specific risks relevant to your setting. And, for larger interventions, it can create time and cost efficiencies by aligning these with any other planned refurbishments or upgrade works.

For settings with a leased estate, it is important to collaborate with your landlord to identify what is possible for your site.
