Establish an outdoor learning programme
Building on the outdoor learning activities you’ve been conducting and the feedback you’ve collected from relevant stakeholders, create a long term, structured programme. Use the challenges and lessons you’ve learnt from this experience as an opportunity to improve the future provision.
This can be adapted for different settings. This programme could look like one class a week outside for certain year groups, specific subjects taught outside, or form time for select groups in the summer term. Alternatively, it could focus on informal play and take advantage of local parks for regular sessions or class trips, retreats, or other outdoor activities.
The two main things you need to consider when developing this plan are adequate locations and scheduling. Speak to the person responsible for timetabling at your setting. Build in flexibility and alternative options in case weather interrupts your regular routine.
Anticipate concerns regarding safety, adult supervision, loss of academic classroom time, scheduling constraints, and logistics. Proactively identifying your needs while researching and proposing some solutions will make your plan more robust. You may need to pull a more formal proposal together to get this signed off by your leadership teams.
