Develop sustainable travel incentives for your learners

Look at how you can support your learners to use sustainable and active travel to and from your setting, with rewards or benefits for choosing to walk, cycle, use public transport or carpool. Examples can include cycle training programs, priority parking for carpool, public transport pass subsidies, participation badges, certificates, parties and competition rewards.

Use the results of your regular travel survey, and seek input from your learners, young people and parents, where appropriate, when selecting the most suitable incentives for your setting. Involving your community in the selection process will help to ensure the best chance of success, which will have a greater impact on your travel-related carbon emissions.

Take advantage of key transition points to reset habits and behaviours, such as at the start of the year or transitions between phases such as primary to secondary, GCSE to A Level or college, or tertiary education.

This is an opportunity to improve your learners's health and well-being, and fosters a whole setting culture of sustainable travel habits, while reducing your environmental impact.
