Understand how to select a baseline year
A baseline year is the point in time you measure your setting's carbon and greenhouse gas emissions against over time. By picking a year as your reference point, you can compare how much carbon your setting produces now to how much it produced in that year. This will help you to see if your efforts to reduce your emissions are working.
For example, if you choose 2022 as your baseline year, you'll compare your annual emissions to those from 2022 to track your progress. This will provide consistency in your reporting, facilitate comparisons and enable you to benchmark against industry standards. Overall, it is a key component to a structured approach to managing your carbon footprint.
This is an important step in being able to track and monitor the success of any actions you choose to take to achieve your sustainability vision, strategy and goals. Being able to quantify your progress will provide good motivation and inspire further action across your whole setting, and because choosing a baseline year impacts all future progress tracking and reporting you may also look to an expert for guidance in choosing the most appropriate year given your context, goals and future plans.
This action will guide you to make informed decisions and demonstrate progress to your stakeholders, most notably your senior leadership, governors and trustees. This can help you to build buy-in on further sustainability initiatives. In some instances, being able to demonstrate progress on reducing your emissions can also be required to access funding and grants.
