Embed sustainability training into the induction of new staff

Use the opportunity of new staff joining your setting to upskill them, set expectations and embed sustainability behaviours and practices from the start. This can help drive your developing ethos and culture at your setting of prioritising sustainability.

Embedding new staff into that approach as early as possible will support your wider efforts. Speak to the individual at your setting that leads on onboarding new joiners and staff induction. Be aware that induction takes place at different points in the academic year.

Induction should include information and briefings about your setting's approach to sustainability and taking climate action. Sharing key documents such as your Sustainability Plan, Strategy and Policy is a starting point and can help frame what your setting is prioritising regarding climate action.

Incorporate formal training to upskill new staff, ensuring that all employees, regardless of role, have the opportunity to improve their carbon literacy. For staff joining your site or facilities team, provide specific training in biodiversity, climate adaptation, and other areas relevant to their duties.

It may also be useful to conduct regular skills gap analyses focused on sustainability for new staff. This will help identify areas where additional training is needed and ensure that development opportunities are aligned with their roles, maximising the effectiveness of your sustainability initiatives across the team.
